Tips and guidelines for parents of neurodivergent kids going in for dental checkups at Bambolim.

A tooth abscess is lots of fun to treat, said no one ever. So when Ryan*, 5, went in to Dental Hospital, Bambolim, to have his abscess cleaned, his mum and he were in for a surprise. The staff and doctors at the hospital were polite and welcoming when they learnt that Ryan is autistic. He was led to a child-friendly paediatric ward and a special, fully air-conditioned kids room  filled with toys and a library, designed in collaboration with Sanjay Centre for Special Education for disabled children. His parents were delighted to see him so happy and cooperative – the doctor even gave him three stars for being such a good little patient!

Two years of therapy has made a big difference to Ryan’s ability to cope outdoors. Things no longer feel as overwhelming and he’s learning to respond in socially appropriate ways.

Here are his mum’s best tips and guidelines for parents of neurodivergent kids going in for dental checkups at Bambolim.
