Expecting to bring our best selves to happy, healthy parenting if we’re run ragged with emotional stress and physical exhaustion is a tall ask. Running on empty has never taken anyone far. And if we do take care of our physical health, how about our mental health? Stress, exhaustion and burnout eventually affect physical health too, and can come out as frustration with our children. Here are some easy ways to decompress, rejuvenate and take on the inevitable vicissitudes of a daily life with :
- Make time for yourself. Start with 10 minutes of ‘me time’ a day for a cup of tea, a walk, a new book, or to sit and do nothing. It’s your time. You decide.
- Meditate. A regular meditation practice enhances calmness, clarity and focus. Find a quiet spot, and a suitable time, preferably in the morning. Begin with 10 minutes a day and gradually increase it.
- Ask for help. Parenthood can be overwhelming. You’re human. It’s okay to turn to friends, family or a professional.
- Cultivate or restart a hobby. Pick up that old instrument or the new gardening tool and refresh your mind.
- Get a good night’s sleep or at least a nap. The benefits of good sleep cannot be overstated. We tell our kids how important it is to get a good night’s sleep and wake up refreshed. It’s time we took our own advice. Aim for 7–8 hours a night. Avoid screens before bedtime and try to set up a calm, comfortable environment while going to bed.
