Do you feel your child is showing difficulties in reading? Are they really struggling? Are they trying their best to avoid reading the books, claiming they hate reading? Do they guess words, or remember them rather than read them?

Notice any of the following traits?

• Difficulty reading words when shown alone or in isolation?
• Difficulty accurately decoding unfamiliar words for example – colonel.
• Difficulty with reading in general, are they slow, inaccurate?
• Difficulty spelling words or spells phonetically, such as football as futbal or said as sed?
Do they write familiar words or substitutes when reading, such as home instead of house?
• Show trouble earning the names of letters and their associated sounds?
• Trouble when segmenting, blending, and manipulating sounds in words?(phonemic awareness)
• Difficulty in rapidly recalling the names of familiar objects, colours, or letters of the alphabet? (rapid naming)
• Do you notice them writing or reading, letter or numbers in reverse for example b for d, or p for q, 3 for E ?
Are numbers such as 7, 3, 5 written in reverse, double-digit numbers written or read in reverse eg 12 as 21, 16 as 61?
• Difficulty following directions or routines?
Do they show confusion over left and right?

These are typically noticed in children with Dyslexia, which is a reading disorder. Do not worry. Sethu is here to help if you have doubts about your child’s ability.
