Using a Scatter Plot: A Guide for Parents

Author:  Andre Velho | August 18th, 2021

A scatter plot is a grid which is divided into days of the week and hours of the day. We use this to record challenging behaviours as they occur. This helps us understand:

  1. How often the challenging behaviour occurs.
  2. The times during the day when the challenging behaviour happens.
  3. The times during the day when the challenging behaviour does not happen.

Step 1: Collect data on one behaviour at a time. For example: screaming only, not screaming and spitting.

Step 2: Note the timings at which your child displays this challenging behaviour that you have selected. Every time your child screams, make a mark on the hour at which it occurs.

Step 3: Do so throughout the day and for least one week.

Step 4: If the behaviour occurs multiple times every day, choose any 2 hours during the day that you will address your child’s challenging behaviour. It is best to select the 2 hours during which you will be able to give maximum attention towards addressing the challenging behaviour. If the behaviour happens less frequently, perhaps 2-3 times a day, then each time the behaviour happens, you can address the challenging behaviour.
