I recently met Shyam, a three and half year old child who was referred to Sethu because he had difficulties with learning alphabets and struggled with writing numbers. Shyam is an expert with the mobile phone. he knows how to make calls, send voice messages on WhatsApp he can even download games and uninstall what he does not want.
It is amazing how children these days learn to use technology so quickly. Considering our lifestyle and the role that technology plays in our lives, it is truly very important to stay updated. However at the same time it often makes me wonder if our children are missing out on the simple pleasures of life.
Encouraging kids to run and climb outdoors, read books, use their imagination and creativity while playing is a healthier and more enriching experience. The first few years of a child’s life are the most important period as their brains and bodies are rapidly growing and they learn best by interacting with people and exploring the environment. Studies have shown that increased electronic media usage can lead to attention problems, school difficulties, sleep and eating disorders in children. Hence, setting limits on screen time is in the best interests of children. Children should get more mobile and less mobiles!
