Writing helps in the development of fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination. It also enhances thinking. Students who take notes by hand are more likely to remember what they are taught. It improves students’ capacity to comprehend language, helping them to think more deeply about vocabulary and spelling, as well as sentence and text structure.
For younger children at Sethu, we have a great programme ‘Handwriting Without Tears’. This is a multisensory approach to teaching and remediating handwriting. This method teaches children to build their letters using a variety of tactile activities.
Sethu’s vision is also to create a world where all children will be accepted and included in all schools and an environment is created that allows them to become the best they can be. Handwriting is a useful skill, but there are options for when this is a challenge such as a scribe, keyboard or voice recorder.
