“How can I cure my child?” is a question we often get asked at Sethu, by parents whose child may have recently been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). They just need something to make things better for their child. There are a lot of hyped approaches that claim to cure autism but none of these is backed by research.
The idea of curing ASD is slowly becoming controversial with the growth of the neurodiversity movement, which emphasises respecting and valuing all people for who they are, regardless of whether they are neurotypical. The largest objection is from people with ASD who see themselves as independent and competent and don’t see themselves as broken and needing to be fixed or cured.
When caring for someone with ASD, it’s important to acknowledge and value their neurodiversity. When we view ASD through this lens, it helps reduce the stigma that our society places on autism and allows us to embrace their differences.
