Parent Self-Care

As a parent, putting yourself first can seem like a distant dream, however we are here to tell you that self-care is really important and YOU deserve to take care of yourself and YOU can choose how. Here are a few ways to help you begin:

1) Check your to-do list: Make sure ‘your time’ features on it. This time can be in small chunks or a longer period. 5 mins in the garden or 10 mins soaking your feet in warm water in the bathroom. Engage in an activity that is relaxing, makes you happy and allows you cut off from the hustle. It can be easier to schedule this time when your child is engaged in an activity or is asleep.

2) Take care of your physical health: Start with little steps to ensure you eat regular meals, get adequate sleep and engage in some regular exercise. Find a friend or family member who will help you stick to your goals and support you.

3) Give all your feelings space: Express your feelings in the same way you encourage your child to – safely and respectfully.

4) Make a chore list: Share household responsibilities of cleaning, shopping, cooking with your spouse, children and other family members. It might not be an equal divide, but it can lessen the load.

5) Stay connected: Send a message, make a phone call, have chai or go for a walk together with those who care for you.
