Breaking barriers: The Unstoppable Spirit of Individuals with Down Syndrome

My work as a healthcare professional supporting young individuals with disabilities has provided me with opportunities to see the world through a different lens. It has taught me that our differences make us human and that every person; with and without a disability, has a story worth telling, a life worth living and dreams worth pursuing.

As I write this article, I am reminded of Rishi (name changed), a 6-year-old boy with curly hair, sparkling eyes and the most infectious smile that can melt anyone’s heart away. Rishi also has Down Syndrome, which means he faced some challenges, especially with his motor skills. His school conducted a swimming program for all the children annually. Although Rishi loved the water, he was unable to participate and keep up with other children during the swimming classes. The low tone and motor challenges due to his Down Syndrome made Rishi easily tired in water. His mother was determined to give Rishi the extra support and practice he needed to build his muscle strength and stamina to swim confidently and effortlessly in water. They therefore started coming for aqua therapy sessions. When Rishi started aqua therapy, he struggled to keep his body afloat, breathe in water and coordinate movement of his arms and legs to travel short distances in water. But every session, instead of getting frustrated and give up, I saw Rishi persevere. I saw him and his mother celebrate with the biggest, brightest smiles and hi fives when he made gains in his swim skills. When he would find an exercise or activity hard, I could hear him take a deep breath and say to himself “I am strong. I can do this!” words he had heard his mother say to him since he was a baby. Within months Rishi was swimming across the pool beaming with happiness and a great sense of pride. His warmth, resilience, and determination shone brightly, reminding everyone that with a heart full of hope, anything is possible.

What is Down Syndrome?
Down syndrome, caused by the presence of an extra chromosome 21, affects approximately 1 in every 800 births in India. This genetic condition is characterised by distinct physical features and can lead to a range of developmental challenges like speech, motor and cognitive differences and health issues such as heart defects.

As October marks Down Syndrome Awareness Month globally, it is an opportune time to shine a light on the strengths and diverse capabilities of people born with this genetic condition.

  • Exceptional Social Skills: One of the standout strengths of individuals with Down syndrome is their ability to form deep and meaningful relationships. Known for their warmth, empathy, and genuine approach to interactions, they often excel in social settings. Their ability to connect with others fosters inclusivity and enriches the lives of those around them.
  • Resilience and Determination: Individuals with Down syndrome often demonstrate extraordinary resilience. From an early age, they face various challenges, but many learn to overcome these hurdles with remarkable determination. “I am not defined by my Down syndrome; I am defined by my dreams and the courage to pursue them.”This inspiring thought by Riza Regi, a young model and artist with Down Syndrome from Bengaluru is a powerful reminder that success is not defined by one’s starting point but by one’s willingness to persevere.
  • Creativity and Artistic expression: Many individuals with Down Syndrome excel in artistic pursuits. Sania Khimji, Jijo Das, Gopikrishnan are among the notable artists, musicians, and performers with Down syndrome in India who are increasingly gaining recognition for their talent, showcasing the rich contributions they make to our cultural landscape.
  • Strong work ethic: Companies are slowly beginning to recognize the value of hiring individuals with Down syndrome who thrive in structured environments. They are dedicated employees who take immense pride in their work. Their loyalty and a strong work ethic is helping individuals with Down syndrome find rewarding roles in various sectors, from hospitality to retail, where their dedication and positivity enhance the workplace culture.
  • Athleticism: Physical activity is another area where many individuals with Down syndrome are excelling. Participation in sports and fitness not only promotes their health but also provides opportunities for personal achievement. Athletes like Madhav Suresh inspire many to see the potential in every individual, regardless of their differences.
Having Down syndrome is not a limitation; it’s an opportunity to see the world through a different lens.”

While societal perceptions have often been limited by stereotypes, many remarkable individuals are breaking barriers and showcasing their talents across various fields. From arts and sports to advocacy and education, those with Down syndrome are proving that ability knows no bounds.

Support from families, educators, and communities is vital for the success of individuals with Down syndrome. Organizations across India are working hard to provide resources, training, and advocacy to help create supportive environments. As we mark Down Syndrome Awareness Month, let us also individually take responsibility to increase our knowledge about it and commit to building a society where diversity is recognised as a strength. By raising awareness and promoting understanding for all kinds of disabilities, we can create a future where every individual is valued for who they are.
