Special Educator? What’s That?
Who am I, and what do I do at Sethu?
My name is Anusha and I am a Special Educator and part of the Inclusive Education team here at sethu. As a special educator, I specialise in helping children who have a variety of disabilities such as intellectual disability, autism, learning disability, slow learner among others.
What is my role as a Special Educator?
As a special educator, I collaborate closely with parents, teachers, professionals and administrators to foster the inclusion, teaching and learning of students with disabilities in their families, communities and schools.
What course did I have to do and what are the skills I needed to be a Special Educator?
I have completed my Bachelors in Special Education, which is currently a 2-year course in India and am registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India. There are several important skills I needed to have or develop along the way to being a special educator. Such as being organised, highly intuitive, detail-oriented, adaptive, creative, calm and an absolute must, a keen interest in working with children. A very important skill I needed to learn is ways to be open to feedback from peers and be in a mode of constant learning.
What does my job require me to do at Sethu?
At Sethu as a special educator, I am required to be engaged in various activities such as:-
- Academic and life skills assessments.
- Assessment Report writing
- Planning interventions based on the assessments.
- Writing IEP’s and discussing the same with the parents.
- Conducting workshops and training for parents, teachers and other special educators.
- Disability advocacy
- Research
I love my work at Sethu and I am so happy that I took the plunge and became a Special Educator. The rewards are enormous – it is a real opportunity to actually change lives.
