Spreading awareness about ADHD needs to continue to identify and support individuals with ADHD.
If you suspect someone you care about might have ADHD, here are a few suggestions for the next steps:
Begin the conversation with strengths – ADHD brings many positive qualities which are unique to each person. Strengths might include creativity, quick thinking, sports skills, out of the box thinking, tons of energy or the ability to hyper-focus.
Share your concerns – Talk without criticising! What you might see as any challenges or difficulties the person might be experiencing. This could be difficulty submitting things on time, complex relationships, emotional upheavals or extreme frustration.
Ask the person what their thoughts are on what you have shared – Respect the stance they take and acknowledge any positive steps they may be taking to manage the challenges.
Give them information about ADHD to read – Websites such as ‘Additude’ and ‘Understood’, have a depth of resources and are great springboards into the world of ADHD.
Share the contact details of a professional such as Developmental and Behavioural Paediatrician, Psychiatrist or Psychologist whom they can approach for help.
