A parent whose child has been diagnosed as having autism asked at one of the therapy sessions, with a worried and embarrassed look, whether she should say that her child is “autistic”.
To that she was informed that each one of us has abilities and disabilities. Prem “has autism” but he too like any of us has his own strengths and limitations.Someone may have diabetes or a heart problem and are unable to function well, and hence they may need to change their style of living by exercising, diet control, or taking medication in order to live a meaningful life. In the same way for the child who “has autism”, tapping his resources, and proper intervention in the form of speech therapy, behavior therapy, sensory integration and any other therapy he needs, will help him function and progress in society. Prem is unique and a gift from God. This insight helped the parent to relax and even smile.
