Visual Schedule
So your child’s therapist has recommended that your child needs a visual schedule because they are such strong visual learners.
But, you have no idea what a visual schedule is, and you’ve never made one before.
Here’s a detailed step by step to making your child’s visual schedule.
You will need: access to a picture software/ website, phone camera, printer, laminator, (printing and laminating can be outsourced to one of the many shops that do this in your locality)scissors, velcro dots, and sheets of card for a base
Step 1: Decide on all of the pictures you need. Deciding what pictures you need may take a bit of planning and time. This will depend on what you want to convey through the visual schedule. It could be a time table of your child’s day, showing the child all that they need to do each day. For example, this can include pictures of freshening up, dressing, eating breakfast, getting on the schoolbus, activities at school, getting back home, and their after school activities… and so on. You get the picture!
When deciding on pictures, you have a choice. You can take photographs of the actual items in your home, for the familiarity they offer your child.
OR
You can use line drawings that are available on many websites for this purpose.
Step 2: Once you’ve decided on all the pictures you need, you can print all the pictures. Apart from printing all these individual pictures, you will also need to print out a template which will be a base for all these individual pictures. The template you need will depend on the kind which you decided on. You can Google ‘visual schedule templates’ to get an idea.
Step 3: Cut out all the pictures, and laminate each one. Laminating these is always the best because that would ensure that these picture cards will last a very long time. With children, you can never be too careful.
Step 4: Add velcro dots to all the picture cards, and make sure you also add the pairing velcro dot to the base card template of the schedule.
That’s it! Now your schedule is ready to use!
