Dysnomia: What is that?

During my training at The Ummeed Training Center, I came across a new term, for me, called Dysnomia. I found it fascinating and Hope that this short article will help you in understanding the term.

Dysnomia is a language challenge that implies that an individual is having trouble recalling the right word to describe something when they need it. The ‘tip of the tongue phenomenon,’ frequently affects people, causing some difficulty with word recall. Dysnomia, however, is more severe and interferes with daily life. It is said that when word recall performance on neuropsychological tests is, worse than average, doctors can make the diagnosis of Dysnomia. An individual with Dysnomia typically struggles to perform well in areas that require excellence in speech and writing skills.

People who have Dysnomia may replace a word with a synonym in an attempt to express their thoughts as they are having difficulty retrieving the actual word. Dysnomics will take longer or stop midway through timed assessments as when trying to remember words or names, they could halt and appear to struggle.

Research shows that up to 20% from the website https://www.twinkl.co.in/teaching-wiki/dysnomia of people experience Dysnomia. Children with Dysnomia can be supported in a number of ways both inside and outside of the classroom.

Here are a few strategies we use at Sethu that can be used to help children with Dysnomia:

‌Parents:
Start a dialogue with the school to inform your child’s teacher and the management about your child’s diagnosis and any other learning disabilities.
‌Assist in creating associations, and use mnemonic devices and learning techniques at home.
Give the beginning sound of the word that the child needs to recall.

Teachers:
Create a welcoming learning environment to encourage all youngsters to feel involved in the class.
‌Avoid placing pressure on the child by calling on them frequently in front of the class.
During tests, allow the student to utilise notebooks or cue cards.
Offer tangible teaching resources, such as word mats, times tables sheets, or posters.
Adapt the way you educate to suit different types of learning, such as kinaesthetic learning.
