Parent feedback on Parent-teacher collaboration on using visual supports.
“At a parent teacher conference, we were shocked to hear that our daughter was behaving “badly” in class. Kicking others while being seated cross legged on the floor, pushing children while walking, poking others with pencils – the list was upsetting as this is not behaviour that is displayed at home nor acceptable. I immediately consulted Aileen and we discussed using a visual to help my daughter understand what was expected of her.
When we discussed the challenging behaviors, my daughter explained that everyone was playing “leg fight” or that she did not start it or X did it first and the teacher only saw me. Her classmates knew that they could get away with such behavior as long as they were not caught but my daughter didn’t understand this social nuance.
I explained to my daughter that certain behavior is not acceptable whether the teacher is watching you or not. We discussed appropriate behavior and did a couple of role playing exercises.
I prepared a list of Classroom Rules – which included hands and feet to yourself, inside voice, raising your hand and after discussing with the teachers we incorporated them in the class. Within a week the behaviors stopped not only for her but the rest of the class as well. Visuals truly are a magic wand!”
