As you all know, learning to use the toilet is an important milestone in our child’s lives as it gives a sense of independence. This is the continuation of the previous two posts that I have shared with you; In the first post, you were introduced to the toilet training readiness checklist, and in the second post, the importance of collecting the toilet data of your child was highlighted.
Today we will share the materials you need to prepare for your child to teach them to use the toilet.
You need to have the following things ready with you in advance:
1. Social Story
– A social story is a situation, a skill or a concept that has relevant social cues, perspectives and common responses and it is in terms of specifically defined style and format. The social story consists of pictures in which the child sees the importance of using the toilet and understands what is expected from them.
2. The Visual Schedule
– Children with ASD are visual learners. It is important to have a visual schedule in the toilet for them to understand what to do when they are in the toilet.
3. Strong Reinforcer
– Reinforcers are things your child likes the most and would do anything to get. The reinforcers that are kept for toileting should be only used for toileting.
Above is an example of a visual schedule which you can refer to for your child when you are preparing them to use the toilet.
